Let’s make Father’s Day special for the new dad in your life! We’ve got easy and fun DIY gift ideas and other suggestions to help make it easy for you to celebrate his special day. With some craft supplies and a few simple steps, DIY also stands for Dad It’s You!

Snacks and Treats

1. Make Father’s Day breakfast easy and delicious with one of the best waffle makers by Hamilton Beach. Then, surprise dad by serving his breakfast on a DIY Wooden Breakfast Tray. See this article by 5 Minutes for Mom to find out how to make it.

Buy waffle mix at Walmart and make fluffy waffles on the non-stick cooking surface of this Hamilton Beach Belgian waffle maker. It features browning control and is engineered with a cool-touch handle. The drip-tray is designed to help catch excess batter.

2. Does dad have a sweet tooth? Make a customized gift basket with all of his favourite snacks.

3. For the handy dad, pack a new toolbox with candy and gum!

4. For the on-the-go dad, put treats in a lunch bag. Include handmade drawings or notes to help make it more personal.

Handmade Treasures

5. Start the day by giving dad a great card. Walmart has a wide selection of greeting cards you can pair with your own (and your children’s) creativity. Grab some brightly-coloured paper, markers and a glue stick. Then, add on a funny pun! “Owl always love you!” or “We have so mushroom in our hearts for a fungi like you!” And, for the Star Wars dad, “Yoda best!”

6. Make a cool keychain. You’ll find some simple ideas on how to make personalized keychains in this article by The Spruce Crafts.

7. Craft a bowl for dad’s keys using a salt dough recipe. Pile rolled lengths of dough to form a bowl and bake in a 180°C oven for about two hours to ensure the bowl is firm. Let cool and paint with acrylics. Messy Little Monster recommends adding a coat of varnish to help ensure your homemade keepsake will last. (Save this salt dough recipe to make Christmas ornaments!)

8. Even the wee ones can decorate a coffee mug for dad! Choose a white ceramic mug from Walmart’s collection. Apply stickers with fun shapes or tape (or both) to make a random design or spell “DAD.” Paint over the whole mug with Painters Bright Colours markers by Elmer’s. Peel off the stickers or tape (or both) to reveal your design. Or, draw your own artwork on the mug. See how simple it can be by watching this short video on YouTube.

9. Make a DIY coupon book that entitles dad to some of the things he enjoys doing or that he might need. From “30 minutes of quiet” to “A free day to go fishing,” he’ll probably take you up on the coupons, so think carefully about what you write on them!

Making Memories

10 A simple DIY for dad the kids can help create—and that must be supervised—is a picture frame made of salt dough, using the same recipe as in #7.

In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of salt with 2 cups of flour. Gradually add up to ¾ cups of water, mixing with your hands until it feels doughy. Knead until smooth.

Now, roll and shape it into whatever shape you want—spell out “DAD” so that photos go within the Ds. To finish off, place the dough into the oven at 100°C—the amount of time it’ll need to bake will depend on the size and thickness of the creation, but generally, baking time is a couple of hours.

11. A contemporary double frame by hometrends, exclusive to Walmart, would look great on his desk, bookcase or nightstand.

Show off dad’s family in this contemporary hometrends frame. It can hold two of his favourite photos. The crisp border will help make the photos pop!

12. You could choose to capture baby’s hand and footprints in washable paint on a white background. Then, place your baby masterpieces in the Gallery Double frame before presenting to dad.

Gadgets on the Go

13. This slim 39-inch Bluetooth Tower Speaker is designed to hold dad’s phone or tablet on top while it streams his favourite music or podcast via Bluetooth. Or, he can use it wired through the auxiliary port.

This tower speaker from Westinghouse can serve as a TV speaker, remote-controlled from his favourite chair. It is engineered with HD Sound and comes equipped with an FM radio. AC cable and remote control are included.

14. “Shake it like a Polaroid picture!” These words may be the song lyrics to Outkast’s “Hey Ya,” but they may also be Dad’s inspiration for taking adorable baby pictures.

This Polaroid camera is an instant-digital hybrid. It instantly prints photos so he can pin them to a corkboard at work. This way, it’ll feel like baby is always with him.

Despite what some say, there’s nothing wrong with giving dad a new tie for Father’s Day. Or, you could show him that you get him by giving him a gift for his Man Cave! No matter how you choose to celebrate the new dad in your life, he’ll feel the love after you give him your one-of-a-kind gift.

Happy Father’s Day!
