“Our mission as a company is to provide safe consumer products.” Kevin Brodwick, Thinkbaby founder.
With a team of doctors and scientists, Thinkbaby makes award-winning sunscreens without using harmful chemicals. They’re adamantly against aerosol sunscreens and never test their products on animals. Even the company’s 4-and-6-ounce sunscreen tubes are BPA-free.
Headquartered in Austin, Texas, Thinkbaby not only complies with safety regulations, it’s determined to stay ahead of the curve. Kevin Brodwick founded Thinkbaby after becoming aware of harmful chemicals found in everyday products. This company worked with a team of physicians and scientists to bring the first BPA-free baby bottle to market. Thinkbaby has expanded its line of PBA-free baby products to include BPA-free feeding sets, sippy cups, baby shampoo and body wash, baby lotion and more (available at Walmart). The company offers sunscreen for the whole family as well as a trusted sunscreen line for babies—all in the name of helping to keep baby safe.
“With Live Clean, you can feel good knowing that you’re making healthier choices every day for you and the Earth.”
A Canadian company founded in 2006, Live Clean creates eco-friendly, plant-based and natural products for the whole family. Using ingredients like oatmeal and shea cocoa butter, Live Clean manufactures sunscreen as well as shampoo, conditioner, cleansers, and moisturizers for the whole family.

“At Aveeno, everything is rooted in our belief that balance is the key to well-being.”
Two Canadian brothers, Albert and Sydney Musher, founded Aveeno in 1945. Their first product was a soothing bath. Five years later, Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion was born. It’s the #1 selling brand of lotion among Canadian women.
Their naturally-sourced ingredients are in all Aveeno Baby products. This line includes mineral sunscreen as well as body wash, shampoo, moisturizers and baby wipes. It also has a baby line of skincare products for sensitive skin and another to help ease eczema symptoms. Aveeno is now part of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies.
“Coppertone is committed to providing consumers with innovative, quality and safe sun-care products based on science, rigorous testing and high standards.”
American company Coppertone got its start in 1944. Its tanning lotion was the first commercial sun care product on the market. Coppertone pioneered the SPF system in 1972 and continues to innovate in the way sunscreen is made and applied. Its sunscreen lines include Water Babies, Pure & Simple, Sport, Sensitive Skin and more. Coppertone offers lotion, spray, stick and whipped formats.

Bell was also the first to use aloe vera in commercial after-sun care. Banana Boat offers lotions, oils, sprays and sticks for Baby, Sport, Kids, and Face.

Why does your baby need sunscreen?
The Canadian Paediatric Society notes that without sun protection, a child can get a sunburn in minutes, even on a cloudy day. The CPS also reports that severe sunburns and lots of unprotected time in the sun have been linked to the development of skin cancer later in life. Health Canada recommends keeping children under the age of one out of direct sunlight, regardless of how dark or light their skin is.
Limiting sun exposure, covering baby in light, loose clothing and a hat and using a stroller with a sunshade are all good advice to help with sun protection. Finding a shady spot and keeping yourself and your baby hydrated can also help protect your and baby’s skin and overall health on hot summer days. And so is using a good quality sunscreen for babies with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30. Look for the term “broad spectrum” on the label. That means the product essentially blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Help protect your little one’s lips using a safe-for-baby lip balm with sun protection in it, too.
Sunscreen is not recommended for babies under 6 months old, because they can rub it into their eyes and mouth. (Talk to your doctor if you have any concerns.) When baby is older than 6 months, Canada’s paediatricians at CPS recommend using a minimum SPF 30 sunscreen on all exposed areas including ears, nose, back of the neck and legs, and on the tops of feet. Sunscreen isn’t instant. It needs at least 15 minutes to start working. Apply it liberally and evenly and reapply every couple of hours. If baby is spending time in the water, the product needs to be reapplied more often.
We hope you feel prepared to get outside with your baby and enjoy the beautiful (and all too brief!) sunny days. Walmart and our best sunscreen brand partners are serious about providing sun protection for baby, you and the whole family.
