Are you asking yourself, “Am I pregnant?” Find out what you need to know to help you determine whether you’re pregnant, so you can stress less and enjoy this special time.
Having a baby is the most amazing thing that ever happened to me—and it can be for you, too. I loved being pregnant, and the early years that followed hold some of our best memories as a family.
Summer is a wonderful time to find out you’re pregnant. It can mean dressing in looser-fitting maternity wear, enjoying weekend afternoons by the pool or on the beach, and relishing some much-needed downtime while on summer vacation.
Preparation is essential to finding your calm during your exciting new life journey. Although the early signs of pregnancy are different for everyone and some women can experience no symptoms at all, there are some potential early signs of pregnancy that are more common than others.
Before Baby Arrives
If your period is usually pretty regular, you’ve been sexually active and your period is late, you may be pregnant. Using a home pregnancy test may be your first step to confirming your pregnancy. According to BabyCenter’s Medical Advisory Board, a home pregnancy test can detect the presence of a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine. Be sure to confirm a positive result with your doctor as soon as possible. If your period has stopped and your home pregnancy test reveals a negative result, retest. If the second test reveals a negative result (and you still don’t have your period), make an appointment to see your doctor.
If you suspect you’re pregnant and you have to wait to see your doctor, you may want to start taking prenatal supplements. The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends taking a multivitamin with 0.4 mg of folic acid every day if you may be pregnant, are planning a pregnancy, are pregnant or nursing. Early in pregnancy, folic acid helps the development of baby’s spine and brain.
This prenatal multivitamin was always my brand of choice. I find some vitamins make me a bit nauseous in the morning, but Nestlé’s MATERNA didn’t irritate my stomach. Each tablet contains 23 essential nutrients to help ensure proper nutritional support before, during and after pregnancy. Still, everyone is different, so check with your health care provider and the pharmacist at your local Walmart Pharmacy to help find the one that’s right for you.
Thank you cards
Many pregnant women choose to wait until they pass their three-month mark to share their big news. The 12-week mark is when the risk of miscarriage drops dramatically. You’ll also start to show around this time. Once you’ve made your announcement, the fun part begins: planning your baby shower and designing your new nursery! Most likely, the moms in your life will be thrilled to come up with baby shower ideas. Just be sure you have handwritten cards ready to thank all the caring people in your life for the adorable baby gifts you will receive in the coming months.
As the months march toward your due date, baby will grow—as will your baby bump. Walmart has maternity wear to suit every style. Long, flowy dresses were my go-to during my pregnancies. I saved my best pregnancy dresses so they could be worn again the next time I was pregnant.
Leslie Swanson, a sleep specialist at the University of Michigan, tells Today’s Parent that more than half of pregnant women experience insomnia. There are a lot of things that can help you get a good night’s sleep, such as avoiding caffeine, reading something relaxing or meditating before bed, or supporting your growing body with a comfy pregnancy pillow.
I tried a few body pillows during my pregnancies, but the best body pillow was the one that helped ease the ache in my hips. This Jolly Jumper Mama Sleep Ez body pillow can help you get the rest you need. It is designed to help provide back, tummy and overall body support during and after pregnancy.
Body lotions and creams
As your body grows, you may experience dry, itchy skin. Some pregnant women prefer to help minimize the appearance of stretch marks, while others consider stretch marks a badge of honour. Body lotions and creams may help if you prefer to minimize them. Bio-Oil is the brand that I liked to use during my pregnancies. The product has been shown to help reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks.
Once you know the answer to the question “Am I pregnant?”—and if your pregnancy is confirmed—you may want to create a Walmart baby registry to help you stay organized with your and baby’s growing list of essentials. A baby registry will come in handy for your guests when your baby shower announcement goes out.
