Features to consider
  • Size: Some are the size of mini cribs (around 40 inches long and 30 inches wide), some can be expanded by adding extra panels. If you’re thinking of using it mostly for play, you may want to consider a larger model.
  • Portability/Collapsibility: Thinking of doing some travelling? You may want to consider a playpen that can easily be folded.
  • Durability: Some playpens or playards are made from different materials like plastic, mesh fabric or wood. Mesh fabric isn’t as strong but is easier to work with, while playpens made from plastic and wood are sturdier.[1]
  • Canopy: Some playpens come with a built-in “hood” for blocking light and heat, which is a good feature to have if you plan on bringing the playpen to the beach, park or backyard.
  • Extra features: Some models include mobiles, lights and sound (to entertain your baby), wheels, bassinet or changing table.
Playpens safety tips
  • Check product recalls: All new or used cribs, cradles, bassinets, playpens or playards sold in Canada must meet a set of safety regulations. To determine if the model you’re considering is safe, visit this site.
  • Do not leave your baby sleeping unattended: Playpens and playards don’t meet the same safety requirements and aren’t as durable as cribs.
  • Make sure sides are in place: If the sides are down, your baby can roll into the space between the mattress and the mesh side which leads to suffocation.[2]
  • Don’t use blankets, pillows or extra bedding: Having these can lead to suffocation.[3]
  • Mesh sides holes should be smaller than ¼ inch: Tiny fingers could get caught in larger holes. They should also be checked regularly for breaks and tears to avoid your baby getting hurt.[4] [5]
  • Keep the playpen away from windows: Including stairs, doors and furniture. Also, make sure the ground is flat and stable if you place it indoors or outdoors.
  • Stop using the playpen when your child can climb out: Your wee one can easily climb out when they reach 34 inches in height or weigh 30 pounds.[6]
  • If a changing table or bassinet is provided: Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for assembly and use.
