Better Ways to Start Your Days

Was that a yawn? Don’t worry—we’re not taking it personally!

Most adults get less than seven hours of sleep per night. According to the National Institutes of Health, we need seven to nine hours of sleep each night to function at your best. If you think that sounds like an impossible dream, you’re not alone. But that doesn’t mean you can’t try to make the most of the sleep you do get.

Up with—or Before—the Birds

As a Toronto radio host, I worked a job that got me up at pre-dawn hours for some three decades. We were up so early each morning; it felt like it was our job to wake up the birds! But so much of the struggle to wake up dissolved like a bad dream when I learned about a device that lights your room gradually as it simulates a sunrise. Sound good? It is that good!

The Philips Wake-Up Light

The Philips Wake-Up Light

Inspired by nature’s sunrise, the PHILIPS Wake-up Light uses a unique combination of light and sound to help wake you more naturally. The colour of the simulated morning light changes from soft dawn reds through warm orange to bright yellow light.

You can choose to have gradual light filling your wintry bedroom or even have that light accompanied by gentle sounds of birds or water or even your favourite FM radio station. This gentle wake-up device was recommended to me by a medical doctor. I only wish I’d found it, oh, perhaps 30 years earlier, especially during those days right after we put our clocks ahead in the spring.

Turn Around, Bright Eyes …

We live in a dream world if we think seven to nine hours of sleep can be a regular thing. For those mornings, concealer can be your best friend.

In a career before photographers’ and TV cameras, I have spent many hours in the makeup chair as professionals did what they could to mask the baggage under my eyes. Thin skin and short nights gave me blue moons and made obvious veins seem even more noticeable. It wasn’t until my favourite makeup artist shared with me her trade secret that I was gratefully able to hide the fatigue that my face was showing to the world.  The great news is that this little wonder makeup concealer is not some expensive product you can only get online or through a boutique or a professional makeup artist. It’s right here at Walmart, online and in store. It comes in shades to match most skin tones, and it’s super affordable.

This super-concentrated treatment concealer by Maybelline New York has a patented micro-corrector applicator to help fill and smooth imperfections on the skin’s surface. The treatment concealer is formulated to help erase dark circles and fine lines and infused with goji berry and Haloxyl.

I find this makeup concealer is easy to use with the click-up sponge applicator. It comes in several different shades and goes on in a thin creamy layer. Sometimes the best tips come from artists who have tried more cosmetics brands and products than most of us can imagine even exist. And when the makeup tip comes from someone who’s not trying to sell me on something, I know it’s coming from the heart.

Maybe We Should Sleep on It—or Wake Up to a Better Beverage

You should try to work towards the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep per night (if you’re not already there yet). Walmart’s got a wide selection of bed pillows to help you work toward this goal.

If you’re like me, you believe that a day without a cup of good coffee might as well be a stormy one. You’ll want to make sure you’re getting the best start to your morning ‘cause life is too short to drink bad coffee, am I right? Luckily Walmart has you covered when it comes to the way you like to make it. A coffeemaker just like this one perked up my mornings for years.

This Cuisinart coffeemaker freshly grinds whole beans just before brewing to help you get the freshest cup of coffee every time. It features a large control panel with automatic shutoff. It has a 1-4 cup setting with the capacity to make 12 cups of coffee at a time.

From whole beans to a whole thermal pot before you are even out of bed? Yes, please!

If you prefer to switch up your coffee flavours,  you might prefer a single-serve brewer designed for single cup coffee pods.  The colour of this single-serve coffeemaker might help wake you up, although there are plenty to choose from at Walmart.ca.

Yep, there are tea and hot cocoa pods! A little something for everyone, right?

When your body is telling you that it’s time for tea, but the clock is telling you it’s time to run, take your favourite tea to-go with a handy beverage storage container.
