In a galaxy far, far away Respawn Entertainment is our new hope for a blockbuster Star Wars video game experience.
This weekend during the Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, Repawn and EA made the big announcement: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 15, 2019. As a massive Star Wars fan, the debut trailer got me really excited about the game, particularly the focus on an all-new Jedi hero. From the story-driven narrative, new characters and a renewed focus on force powers and lightsaber this could be the next epic, single-player Star Wars experience we’ve been craving since The Force Unleashed a decade ago. Perhaps most exciting is Respawn Entertainment is at the helm of the project—a developer widely known for raising the bar in the sci-fi, action-adventure genre.
Could they be the studio to deliver the story-based Star Wars game we’ve been waiting for?
The story details so far…
The game is a single-player experience where you take on the role of Cal Kestis, a Padawan fighting for survival after Order 66 has been enacted. The order, executed by Chancellor Palpatine, was the ultimate betrayal—turning his forces on the Jedi and systemically eradicating them.
Kestis is now a hunted man, hiding his powers not to attract unwanted attention. In secrecy, he works to rebuild the Jedi Order with an unlikely band of allies, trying to stay one step ahead of the Empire in a fight for survival.

Respawn in a galaxy far, far away
When Respawn dropped giant mechs out of the sky with Titanfall in 2014 they delivered a phenomenal multiplayer experience with incredibly tight, fast-paced gameplay. The former developers of the Call of Duty franchise know a thing or two about creating adrenaline pumping experiences; this bodes extremely well for their first foray into the Star Wars universe.
Their next title, Titanfall 2, is where Respawn doubled down on everything from the first game in the series and also included a stellar single-player story mode. This is where Respawn has me sold as a developer that can tell an incredible story, and continue to keep gameplay fresh and fast paced. Another reason to be encouraged by Titanfall 2’s direction is the fact they carefully listened to what their audience wanted. Using this feedback they delivered a title that many considered (myself included) the sleeper hit of 2016.
Recently, much like a Titan, Apex Legends dropped unexpectedly onto the scene. The game looked to make a splash in the battle royale genre and it did just that, reaching 50 million players in less than 30 days. Since its launch it has been celebrated for innovative, fast-paced gameplay.
Looking at Respawn’s pedigree of work, the developer offers incredible design, fantastic storytelling and plenty of innovation. This could be the developer that pushes the Star Wars franchise in new, bold directions.
Return of the Jedi
Instead of just facing off against throngs of Stormtroopers (and you’ll have some of that too!) deeper challenges in the form of enemies known as Purge Troopers and Inquisitors look to add a more variety to combat.
Purge Troopers are created from the genetic template of Jango Fett (clone “father” of Boba Fett) who was one of the best known warriors in the galaxy. These confrontations sound like they will be challenging and the Purge Troops look to be tough as nails, but they are the least of your concerns, enter the Inquisitors.
If the Purge troops can’t defeat you they’ll call in Inquisitors who are force sensitive and extremely powerful. They will battle you hand-to-hand encounters that look absolutely epic!
Luckily, you have a few tricks up your sleeve to deal with the variety of enemies.
The Lightsaber: Evolved
Respawn and EA have hinted at the fact that the lightsaber is different this time around. In the reveal trailer we’ve seen a damaged saber which means there might be opportunities to rebuild it as you progress. We’ve also been told that it is special, and deeply tied to the story. It will grow and evolve with your character becoming more powerful as you master the force. It all sounds like an exciting way to upgrade one of the most iconic weapons in sci-fi history!
New droid, who dis?
Help is on the way! Move over BB-8, a new droid to the Star Wars universe has arrived! In the first trailer we were introduced to BD-1 who will act as your upgradable sidekick. He comes equipped with various tools (which haven’t all been detailed yet) but one that was on display was the flashlight. He’ll light your way down dark caves and looks to offer help on your quest. The new droid seems like he could be a fun companion, akin to R2-D2 and C-3P0.
Over the years, Respawn Entertainment has made a name for itself, they have the creativity that can push the Star Wars gaming franchise in a brave, new direction. We still haven’t seen gameplay yet, and most likely won’t until E3, but what has been shown is reason to get excited for the next gaming adventure in a galaxy far, far away.
I can’t wait to take that journey this November when the game launches on November 15, 2019.
