1Kitchen: Make the most of drawer space with organizers.

We all have (at least) one junk drawer that acts as a kitchen storage catch-all, holding everything from takeout menus to rubber bands to oven mitts. Make meal prep and cooking easier with drawer organizers: use different sizes to compartmentalize items so you can spot them in a snap. You can even use a deep drawer as a mini pantry by adding bins for potatoes and bread.

2Laundry Room: Mount drying racks on the wall.

Drying racks can take up a lot of floor space, so finding an out-of-the-way spot to air dry clothes can be a challenge, especially in small spaces. Look for racks that can be mounted to the back of the laundry room door or on a wall. You can fold them away when they’re not in use and create valuable space for folding, sorting and ironing.

Energy-Saving Tip
Planning to air dry your clothes? Using a little less detergent will help prevent them from getting crunchy, which is often a result of excess residue. Plus, you’ll save on detergent costs (on top of the energy savings you already get from skipping the dryer cycle).

3Entryway: Keep shoes, bags and other accessories in a multifunctional storage bench.

Every busy family knows the struggle with shoe storage. An easy solution that won’t take up too much space is a stylish bench with cubbies or a shelf built in. When the kids come home, they can take a seat and store their shoes right underneath the bench. And when everyone’s shoes aren’t piled on top of each other, you can easily choose your favourite pair when running out the door.

Save even more room in entryway cabinets or cubbies by storing pairs of shoes heel-to-toe. This will also help you see which ones are flats and which are heels.

4Bathroom: Install shelves above the toilet and over the counter for towels and toiletries.

Finding extra room for storage in a bathroom is no easy feat, especially in smaller powder rooms. Save precious floor space by strategically placing a shelving unit for over the toilet storage where you can keep extra towels and toilet paper. If you need more room for toiletries, install a few sleek floating shelves above the countertop where you can keep everyday necessities like moisturizers, cleansers and lip balms.

If you have a medicine cabinet that’s almost too full to close, look for small wire shelves or risers to double the space: store jars underneath and bottles on top.

5Home office: Use a rolling cart or plastic drawers on wheels to store supplies.

If you or your kiddos are trying to get work done from home, a cluttered desk can be a major distraction. Clear up space by using a set of plastic drawers on wheels (perfect for kids’ rooms) or a sleek rolling cart. They’re easy to move around and stow away when not in use. Display your favourite plants or photos on top and store supplies like paper, sticky notes and pens inside.

6Garage: Keep sports equipment, tools and other supplies organized in colour-coded storage bins.

A disorganized garage can keep you from achieving your DIY dreams or delay a family weekend of adventure. Get organized fast by sorting everything into colour-coded bins (use grey for sports, blue for tools, beige for camping, etc.) Or use clear bins with detailed labels on them so you know what’s inside each container and you can easily grab what you need when you need it.

Encourage your children to get in the habit of picking up their toys at the end of the day as part of keeping their room tidy. Look for bins with fun characters or designs on them (or go for neutral baskets if that’s more your style) and let kids decide which toys go in which container: one for dolls, one for cars, one for building blocks, etc.

Can’t see the playroom floor because of too many toys? Help your little ones embrace the “one in, one out” rule: Whenever they get a new toy, they give up one for donation. It teaches them to be charitable and helps keep clutter under control.

8Dining room: Keep silverware and serving dishes in a stylish buffet or sideboard.

Finding spots to stow away your favourite entertaining utensils can be tough when your kitchen cupboards are already full. Invest in a low-profile buffet or sideboard where you can keep serving bowls, salad tongs and other dishes reserved for dinner parties. They’re functional and don’t take up a ton of space, and they offer a great spot to show off your favourite family photos and heirlooms.

If space is at a premium in your living room and you already have some side tables and shelving units, consider swapping out your coffee table for one that offers extra storage. Look for models that feature lift tops, drawers and extra shelves where you can keep items like remotes and books. Then you can show off your favourite décor accents, like succulents and candles, on top.
