Across Canada, families are preparing for March Break 2019, even though the precious winter week off school can take place as late as April, depending on where you live. Add Reading Week for college and university students to that mix and there are a lot of people planning an escape to warmer climates or looking for things to do here at home.
Sometimes called Spring Break or Winter Break, Québec and New Brunswick elementary and high school students are the early birds, taking the week off beginning Monday, March 4. Newfoundland and Labrador get their break more than a month later. Not only do school calendars differ from province to province, but sometimes also from one school district to the next. Many major universities and colleges across the country are taking the week of February 18-22 to unwind and recharge. Whenever you get March Break, keep these ideas in mind when planning a fun time for the whole family.

Museums, recreation centres and other town-or-city-managed properties often have special activities planned for March Break. Family skating times are usually increased at local ice rinks to accommodate this popular local activity. Ski hills, as well as other outdoor winter recreation spots like toboggan hills in the area, tend to fill up quickly at this time of year. Check social media and centre websites for family-friendly dates and times. It’s worth noting that many local activities are offered under special family pricing, suggested donation, or the best cost of all: free!
Spending time outdoors is much more enjoyable when you’re dressed for the weather. These thermal socks for boys can help keep their feet toasty inside boots or skates. They have a soft, fluffy lining and anti-slip silicone gripper to help guard against slipping. Perfect for the young Avengers fan!
Some families like winter camping. I’m glad I’m not in one of those families! But cold weather camping offers its own kinds of fun, like snowshoeing, tobogganing, and enjoying the wonders of nature in winter. If you’re hardcore, you can wrap up like burritos and sleep in a tent. “Glampers” rent a yurt or a cabin. And those who want all the comforts of home, take an RV. Many provincial parks, private campgrounds and RV parks offer winter camping.
What does the fox say? This kids’ Ozark Trail sleeping bag is inviting and fun! It’s 1.6 metres (5.25 ft) tall and weighs less than two pounds, so it’s not too heavy to carry in the foxy backpack that comes with it. With its distinctive orange hue and mischievous fox face, there’ll be no wondering “Which one’s mine?” the morning after a sleepover.

If a sunny destination with sandy beaches and sunshine is more your style, plan early for your getaway because thousands of others—especially post-secondary students—have the same idea for the same week! Visit Walmart.ca for all of those little things you need when you’re going to seek summer in the middle of our winter: travel-size toiletries, sunscreen, hair care products (like anti-frizz serum in case your hair doubles in size as mine does in the heat!) and bathing suits and cover-ups. Don’t forget to arrive extra early to avoid airport congestion and extra-long check-in wait times.
If you’re going south, Mama needs a new pair of flip flops! These versatile slip-on flip-flops are great for the beach, but they’re also nice enough to pair with shorts, capris or even a long skirt. Why pack more than you must when one budget-friendly pair of George sandals can get you through the day and into the evening?
A staycation can be just as fun as going away—if you plan for it. If you hope for inspiration to strike on the Sunday night before March Break, you might find yourself flaked out on the couch watching Seinfeld reruns all week (not that there’s anything wrong with that!).
Shh! Don’t tell the kids but learning doesn’t have to stop just because school is out. Walmart has lots of learning toys to help keep the kids’ minds sharp while they are away from school. Or, maybe your kids would prefer to sing their hearts out to songs by Ariana Grande or Ed Sheeran as they sing along with the help of a karaoke machine. Planning a karaoke night for the family, complete with fun snacks, is a great way to help keep the family connected.
Connect this colourful microphone to your MP3 player or mobile device, play your favourite songs and sing along! In Music Magic mode, the Vtech Kidi Star turns down the volume of the recorded singer’s voice and puts your vocals out front. The built-in voice changer has four games, four vocal sound effects, plus an applause button and light effects. It will even record your performance for up to two minutes at a time.
Fondue is a French word that means “to melt.” This three-tiered waterfall chocolate fondue fountain by SALTON melts up to 700 grams of white, milk or dark chocolate. Have family fun together as you take turns coating pieces of fruit. You can coat cookies in this chocolatey goodness, although you may want to save this treat for yourself. Yum!
