Position rack in centre of oven, then preheat to 350°F. Line a 9x5-in loaf pan with parchment.

Combine flours, baking powder and baking soda in medium bowl. Set aside.

Combine margarine with brown sugar in a large bowl. Beat, using an electric mixer on medium-high, until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Beat in eggs, buttermilk and vanilla, scraping sides occasionally, until blended. Alternately beat in flour mixture and bananas until blended. Stir in walnuts. Scrape into prepared loaf pan.

Bake until top is dark golden-brown and a toothpick inserted in centre of loaf comes out clean, about 60 minutes. Transfer to a rack to cool for 10 minutes. Then remove bread from pan and let cool completely on rack, about 60 minutes.
