Best French Onion Soup Recipe
Top it with toasted, crusty slices of bread and broil in the oven (don't forget oven-safe bowls) until the Gruyère cheese is bubbling hot.
Position rack in centre of oven, then preheat broiler.
Stir onion soup mix and cold water in a medium saucepan. Bring to boil over medium-high heat, whisking constantly. Reduce heat to low and simmer, partially covered, whisking occasionally, 5 minutes.
Arrange 4 individual oven-safe bowls on a baking sheet baking sheet. Pour soup into bowls. Top each bowl with a slice of bread, then evenly sprinkle cheese over top.
Broil until cheese melts and is golden, about 2 to 3 minutes. Serve hot.
Tip: Cut back on prep time by using shredded cheese.
