Stir chicken broth with water in a 5-L pot until dissolved. Add linguine, tomatoes, onion, garlic and oil, then bring to a boil over high heat.
Boil over medium-high, stirring and turning linguine frequently, until linguine is tender and water is almost evaporated, but mixture is still saucy, about 10 minutes.
Serve with fresh basil leaves and grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.
