    Position rack in centre of oven, then preheat to 350°F. Line an 8x8-in baking pan with parchment. Fill a medium saucepan with 1 inch of water and bring to a simmer.

    Combine chocolate and butter in a medium heatproof bowl. Place bowl over simmering water until melted, about 6 minutes, stirring occasionally.

    Remove from heat. Whisk in sugar and 1/4 cup of the maple syrup until dissolved. Whisk in eggs one at a time. Stir in flour and salt until just combined. Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth top.

    Bake until a toothpick inserted in centre comes out almost clean with a few crumbs clinging, about 35 minutes.

    Remove pan to a rack and let cool completely.

    Whisk remaining 1/4 cup of the maple syrup and icing sugar in a small bowl, adding water 1/4 tsp at a time, if needed, to make a smooth, pourable glaze. Drizzle overtop of brownie. Sprinkle with additional sea salt, if desired. Cut into 16 squares.
