Samsung Announces the Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e Smartphones

Samsung Announces the Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e Smartphones—and they’re available for pre-order now at!

Samsung officially unveiled the Galaxy S10, S10+, and its entry-level S10e during its ‘Unpacked’ event in San Francisco, California, on February 20th. Using bold phrases like “premium smartphones” offering “next-generation experiences,” Samsung made it clear their latest devices aim to push smartphone technology even further. This week’s reveal is also celebrating the Samsung Galaxy 10th Anniversary, with the first phone in the series debuting back in June 2009.

Samsung Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e – what are the differences?

With three new models to choose from, let’s take a look at features that differentiate them.

Samsung Galaxy S10 - 1

Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e: screen size and resolution

The centrepiece of Samsung’s new line is the Galaxy S10, offering a 6.1-inch Curved Dynamic AMOLED screen, a first of its kind for smartphones. This display is HDR10+-certified, meaning it offers a wide colour gamut for vivid, brilliant images—even in bright sunlight. It also reduces blue light without compromising picture quality, which can help reduce eye strain and fatigue.

The larger, pricier Samsung Galaxy S10+ features a spacious 6.4-inch screen and incorporates the same Curved Dynamic AMOLED technology. Both the S10+ and S10 screens feature Quad HD+ resolution capable of displaying 3,040 x 1,440 pixels with a 19:9 aspect ratio.

For budget-conscious consumers, Samsung has the lowered priced Galaxy S10e model. It retains the Dynamic AMOLED screen (albeit smaller at 5.8-inch) of the more expensive models but sacrifices a few features. For instance, the S10e screen displays Full HD+ resolution (2,280 x 1,080 pixels), a lower resolution than the Quad HD+ in the other two models. Additionally, the S10e screen is flat whereas the S10 and S10+ are curved.

Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e: Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensor

One of the more interesting features of Samsung’s S10 line is the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. The camera can read the 3D contours of your physical thumbprint (not a 2D image of it) resulting in what Samsung describes as “vault-like security.” On the Galaxy S10 and S10+, the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is built into the display. For the Galaxy S10e, the sensor is side-facing along the device’s bezel.

Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e: camera

Taking a look at the cameras, we see that all models have three in common:

  • Rear
  • Wide-angle: 12-megapixel Dual Pixel AF, F1.5/F2.4 (77°)
  • Ultra Wide: 16-megapixel AF, F2.2 (123°)
  • Front
  • Selfie: 10-megapixel Dual Pixel AF, F1.9 (80°)

Both the S10 and the S10+ include a third rear-facing camera, a Telephoto 12-megapixel F2.4 (45°). The telephoto camera is good for taking portraits of people or close-up objects while adding background blur or other effects. The S10 and S10+ also feature 10X digital zoom, compared to the 8X digital zoom found on the S10e.

The S10+ contains a second front-facing camera not found on the other models, namely the RGB Depth camera. This 8-megapixel, F2.2 (90°) camera helps capture better depth data to make selfie AR filters (like those on Instagram) look more realistic.

Looking at camera recording capabilities, all three models can record 4K video on both their rear- and front-facing cameras. As well, each has a super steady mode to stabilize the camera, which can minimize video recording bumps and shakes. All models also feature a 960 fps super slow-mo video option. Finally, Samsung gave all of them AI Scene Optimizer tech that can automatically change camera settings to capture pro-grade shots.

Samsung Galaxy S10 - 2

Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e: storage options

As a baseline, all models come with 128GB of internal storage for apps, photos, and videos. Upgrade options also exist:

  • S10 – upgradeable to 512GB internal memory
  • S10+ – upgradeable to 512GB or a whopping 1TB internal memory
  • S10e – upgradeable to 256GB internal memory

In addition, each smartphone has a MicroSD slot that can expand its memory by up to 512GB.

Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e: RAM

Starting with the Galaxy S10, it comes with 8GB of RAM. The S10+ also comes with 8GB of RAM and can be upgraded to 12GB. Turning our attention to the S10e, it comes with a base 6GB of RAM, which can be expanded to 8GB.

Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e: battery

The battery power is slightly different based on the model; here are the capacities:

  • S10 – 3,400mAh
  • S10+ – 4,100mAh
  • S10e – 3,100mAh

At the time of writing, Samsung hasn’t shared information on total battery life hours per model. Given the power increase as you step up models, in theory at least the S10+ should provide the longest battery life.

One other significant feature is worth pointing out: Samsung has given each model Wireless PowerShare capabilities. This enables you to charge other devices by resting them on the S10’s back. Keep in mind wireless battery charging only works with compatible Qi-certified smartphones and compatible wearable devices.

Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e: available colours

In Canada, the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, and Galaxy S10e all come in three colour options: Prism White, Prism Black, and Prism Blue. Another differentiator of the S10+ is it’s the only model available in two additional premium ceramic models: Ceramic Black and Ceramic White.

Samsung Galaxy S10, S10+, S10e – other shared features

Now that we’ve covered the main differences let’s take a quick look at some of the shared features you can expect across the Galaxy S10 lineup. For starters, all devices are IP68 water and dust resistant to help protect your investment. They feature a next-generation processor and Samsung services like Bixby, Samsung Health, Samsung Pay, and Samsung DeX. And lastly, they contain Intelligent Wi-Fi that facilitates uninterrupted and safer connections by seamlessly switching between Wi-Fi and LTE, and alerting you to potentially risky Wi-Fi connections. Furthermore, Galaxy S10 phones support the new, faster Wi-Fi 6 standard for the best performance with compatible routers.

Galaxy Buds

Alongside the Galaxy S10 line, Samsung announced an expansion of their Galaxy wearable line including the new Galaxy Buds. These sleek, cord-free earbuds offer a seamless connected experience on the go, with up to six hours of Bluetooth streaming and up to five hours of call time. The buds are compact in size, featuring sound by AKG and dual integrated microphones to deliver your voice clearly. To help keep you aware of your environment while the earbuds are in, the ‘Enhanced Ambient Sound’ lets you hear noises around you. You can also use the Samsung Galaxy S10 to wirelessly charge the Galaxy Buds for a quick charge boost.
