Our staff’s Valentine’s Day playlist features love songs that inspire us.
Ah, Valentine’s Day. A day filled with flowers, chocolate, cupids, romance, and love. There are so many different ways we can express our love, but few are as powerful as a heartfelt love song. Some tunes express the joy of togetherness, while others explore the meaning of love itself.
To celebrate Valentine’s Day, we asked our staff to choose their favourite love songs and explain what it means to them. From classic Beatles hits to timeless rock & roll ballads, our eclectic love song playlist has something for everyone!
Paul’s favourite love songs:
Nothing Else Matters by Metallica
A powerful love song that reminds you to always trust each other and be open with one another. It encourages you to grab life together and make it your own. Metallica’s best love song!
Tainted Love by Soft Cell
While on the surface this song talks about flawed love, I always interpreted this song as a reminder that relationships aren’t always easy. Sometimes you might disagree, or maybe even get into an argument! During these moments it’s important to remember why you love each other and to forgive and let go. This song always provides me the perspective needed.
Say You’ll Haunt Me by Stone Sour
Corey Taylor has the best voice I’ve ever heard and this fun love song has an unusual twist on love. It asks your love to “haunt” you and for them to reiterate and reinforce they love you. In every relationship, you need to hear that you’re loved, otherwise why be together? Expressing your love is key to a happy relationship!

Careless Whisper by George Michael

So Happy Together by The Turtles
As one of the catchiest love songs out there, So Happy Together brings about a nostalgic feeling of endearment that’s perfect for Valentine’s Day. Just don’t blame me when you can’t get this tune out of your head!
Beyond the Sea by Bobby Darin
You may feel the need to snap your fingers and croon along to Bobby Darin’s touching melody, Beyond the Sea. The lyrics paint a strong image of a sailor’s significant other waiting for him to return home, and that’s a sentiment that anyone that’s ever been in a long distance relationship can relate to.
My Way by Frank Sinatra
Sometimes a little dose of self-love is all you need to carry you through a holiday that celebrates couples. My Way by Frank Sinatra is a classic that’s capable of empowering you while encouraging your strong sense of individualism.
Steve’s favourite love songs:
Everlong by The Foo Fighters
The chorus in Everlong is simply beautiful, Dave Grohl’s lyrics are incredible.
Love Of My Life by Queen
Queen’s love ballads are always powerful, but this one stands as one of the greats.
Fall For Me by Teenage Bottlerockets
Fall For Me is fast and equally catchy, a love song that sticks in my head long after listening.
John’s favourite love songs:
Faithfully by Journey
Nobody does vocals like Steve Perry, and Faithfully is his perfect compliment to the endurance of love. Faithfully is just as iconic as it is relatable, and that’s what makes it so special.
The Luckiest by Ben Folds
This song is just so absolutely honest and heartfelt, I find it impossible not to feel emotional from the song’s sincerity about the luck behind finding true love.
Never Too Much by Luther Vandross
If you’re really feeling it, you can probably relate to this song from start to finish. Luther nails the feeling of never getting enough of someone.
Anita’s favourite love songs:
Somebody to Love by Queen
Not your typical love song but … I was absentmindedly singing along to this song in the car when my boyfriend quietly said: “I’ll love you until you find somebody to love” … and that sealed the deal! We’ve been married over 20 years.
Something by the Beatles
Swoon-worthy … you know it’s got to be something special when Frank Sinatra deems it the “greatest love song of the past 50 years.”
Lovesong by Adele
My daughter’s fave love song, it was originally recorded by The Cure back in 1989 and played over and over by yours truly (okay, now I’m dating myself—no pun intended!)
Lisa’s favourite love songs:
Love Bites by Def Leppard
Slow and powerful, this rock ballad is a tribute to the wonderful but wretched misery of being in love!
No Matter What by Badfinger (covered by Def Leppard)
Lyrically, this classic sums up true love in that no matter what you do, your love will still be there for you.
My Love by Paul McCartney & Wings
I believe this was McCartney at his peak, in a song he wrote for his first wife, Linda, whom he adored.
Catalina’s favourite love songs:
Wave of Mutilation by Pixies
Because I fell in love with my husband over this soundtrack, and the Pixies are still our favourite.

Sweet, sad, sentimental—so many reasons to love this love song classic.
True Affection by Father John Misty
Almost anything by this guy sets the mood, but this song has the cleanest lyrics so …

Everything by Michael Bublé
Played for our first dance at our wedding, this song has such a happy vibe plus the lyrics mention an August day which reminds me of when we had our first date.

It gave me goosebumps when I saw them perform this song in A Star is Born … OMG the chemistry between those two! And I still have the same reaction whenever I hear it!
You’ll Accompany Me by Bob Seger
When it felt like I’d be single forever, I’d hear it and wish someone would feel this way about me and then when I met my husband, it turned out this is one of his favourite songs—it’s our song now.
Erin’s favourite love songs:
Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers
My husband and I had this lovely ballad sung at our wedding and was our first dance at the reception in February 1988.
Dream a Little Dream by The Mamas and The Papas
Our daughter, who passed away in 2015 at 24, sang this with her high school orchestra and we play that whenever we want to feel closer to our Lauren, who is the inspiration for the book “Mourning Has Broken: Love, Loss and Reclaiming Joy” (HarperCollins Feb. 26 2019)
She by Elvis Costello
This version can be found on the soundtrack to Notting Hill and is just the perfect musical love letter for someone who adores a woman, flaws, flourishes and all.
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!
