Cupid’s lighthearted co-op favourites

Below you’ll find a selection of fun-loving, co-operative games that your valentine may enjoy!

Overcooked 2 (Xbox One and Nintendo Switch) – for couples with a big appetite

[ESRB Rating: E] Metacritic Score: 81 | Overcooked 2 Trailer

Overcooked 2If Cupid opened a diner to test relationship communication skills, it would most definitely be named Overcooked! My wife and I absolutely love the series, which tasks you with operating a kitchen and assembling meals for customers. It doesn’t matter your skill level—casual gamers can pick up and play, while experienced players still get a fun challenge.

Overcooked 2 serves up new restaurant themes, recipes, and obstacles that always keep the menu fresh. The gameplay features a new throw mechanic, allowing you to toss ingredients around the kitchen to your fellow chefs; the health inspector is going to love it! The game offers some hilarious high stakes situations with hangry customers, but it’s all in good fun.

Get your kitchen moving by channelling your inner Gordon Ramsay to get the job done!

Just Dance 2019 (PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch) – for couples that enjoy working out together

[ESRB Rating: E 10+] Metacritic Score: 77 | Just Dance 2019 Trailer

Just Dance 2019

If you are into dancing the night away with your loved one, give Just Dance 2019 a spin! Ubisoft’s rhythm game is all about getting you moving, regardless of your skill level.  If you’re an athletic couple looking for a fun way to work out at home or prefer dancing in the comfort of your own living room (like me) Just Dance is a great option.

To play, all you need to do is match the on-screen choreography with moves of your own—and it’s ok to improvise! Over 40 chart-topping hits are included, like “Finesse (Remix)” by Bruno Mars Ft. Cardi b., “Bang, Bang, Bang” by BIGBANG and more. You can even take advantage of “sweat mode” which provides a great workout while tracking the calories you burn.

LEGO DC Super Villains (PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch) – for couples big into superheroes

[ESRB Rating: E 10+] Metacritic Score: 74 | LEGO DC Super Villains Trailer

LEGO DC Super Villains

If you and your special someone are into DC characters, LEGO DC Super Villains offers amazing couch co-op action. The game lets you build your own “bad guy” duo and be the best villains you can be!

The drop-in/drop-out co-op works seamlessly, allowing your player two to join in your quest for mayhem anytime. If one of you needs to take a break, don’t worry! You can momentarily drop-out, then resume playing when you’re ready—how’s that for flexibility? As big DC comics fans, my wife and I have a great time exploring iconic locations like Gotham City, Metropolis, and Smallville in their charming LEGO form.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Nintendo Switch) – for couples that love working as a team

[ESRB Rating: E] Metacritic Score: 80 | New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe Trailer

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

There’s nothing quite like enjoying a classic platformer together, and Mario is the perfect host for a romantic Valentine’s evening in! New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe has loads of bonus content not found in the original: new characters, new levels, and three additional game modes in Challenges, Boost Rush, and Coin Battle. In total, the game features 164 platforming courses that can provide you and your loved one with hours of couch co-op fun!

I love the addition of Toadette and Nabbit; these new characters offer more assists to less experienced players—leveling the playing field so newcomers can have a blast too.

This game is specially made for couples. Right out of the box you can have two players, one using the Left Joy-Con and the other the Right Joy-Con, offering great value from the get-go! If you want to add more players to the mix (the game supports up to four players), Walmart Canada has Joy-Con controllers available in a variety of colours.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo Switch) – for couples into fun, fast racing

[ESRB Rating: E] Metacritic Score: 92 | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Trailer

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Mario Kart 8 is a couch co-op must have, letting you race together through zany tracks with thrilling loop-de-loops, secret underwater passages and big air jumps. I’ve been a Mario Kart fanatic since the first game appeared on the SNES, and this entry is all the best elements of the series combined in one game. It’s a staple go-to in my gaming collection for pure, simple racing fun for everyone. With 48 tracks to explore, and over 40 unique characters to unlock and race as, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe can quickly find a spot in both your hearts.

Just don’t forget to use those turtle shells sparingly against your partner, you don’t want to end up in the dog house like me!

A Mature Gaming Couples Getaway

This next selection of games is packed with space adventures, Hollywood style shootouts and epic battles against the forces of evil! If you are a couple looking for more mature thrills, they are here in spades!

Star Wars Battlefront II (PS4 and Xbox One) – for couples that want to visit a galaxy far, far away

[ESRB Rating: T]  Metacritic Score: 68 | Star Wars Battlefront II Trailer

Star Wars Battlefront II

If you and your valentine are bound by the force (or the dark side), Star Wars Battlefront II has stellar co-op adventures to share in a galaxy far, far away.

You and your loved one can embark on an epic co-op adventure following in the footsteps of Iden Versio, a female military soldier serving the Galactic Empire. This all-new Star Wars chapter features plenty of fan service that got my wife and I excited, such as meeting iconic characters like Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa and Han Solo.

A Way Out (Xbox One and PC) – for couples that love a great story

[ESRB Rating: M]  Metacritic Score: 79 | A Way Out Trailer

A Way Out

Don’t break your Valentine’s heart this year, instead, help them break out of prison!

A Way Out puts you and your partner in the shoes of Leo and Vincent who are working together to escape the slammer. Each decision you make as a team impacts how the story ends and believe me, it’s a thrilling conclusion that kept me and my wife on the edge of our seats! This experience encourages you to plan and coordinate each move to avoid the long arm of the law. If you are looking to share a great story packed with action and drama, you’ve found it!

Diablo III: Eternal Collection (PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch) – for couples big into demon slaying

[ESRB Rating: M] Metacritic Score: 88 | Diablo III Eternal Collection Trailer

Diablo III: Eternal Collection

The couple that slays demonic forces together stays together!

Diablo III is an action-RPG multiplayer game that lets you choose your warrior class and explore powerful weapons, all while battling back the forces of evil. With seven different classes to choose from, you and your significant other can incorporate your playstyles into your party; I love melee style characters, so I decided to use the sword-swinging barbarian! The missus supports my haphazard play with the necromancer, often saving my bacon from hell’s minions.

You complement each other so well in real life, why not become the power couple the world needs to destroy legions of evil?

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (PS4, Xbox One, and PC) – for highly competitive couples

[ESRB Rating: M] Metacritic Score: 83 | Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Trailer

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Looking for more thrills, explosions, and adrenaline rushes with your player two? Call of Duty Black Ops 4 has what you’re looking for with split-screen modes that let you share all the action.

Battle back the undead in the series’ iconic Zombies mode with up to three other players online. You and your significant other can also jump into the traditional multiplayer experience and watch each other’s back as you battle for glory. Call of Duty’s new battle royale mode, Blackout, is the first in the genre to feature split-screen support, allowing you both to battle dozens of enemies from the comfort of your couch. How’s that for romantic?

With so many great co-operative video games out there, having a romantic gaming night has never been easier. Good luck achieving that new high score together!
