If your family needs to upgrade a laptop, vacuum or video game console, a like-new product may be just the thing for your lifestyle and wallet. Refurbished goods work as well as their new counterparts—but they cost a whole lot less.
Still not sold? That’s fair. The concept of dropping your hard-earned cash on a small appliance or piece of tech that’s been previously owned (sometimes for just a few days) can be daunting, even if it’s at a great price.
Luckily, Walmart Canada has done the legwork for you with a hand-picked list of 6,000 products that meet strict refurbishment program requirements.
Here’s everything you need to know about shopping refurb.
1Does refurbished mean "used"?
No, refurbished products aren’t really “used.” They’re usually items that were returned due to a production defect, damage that occurred during shipping or a customer’s change of heart. The computer, phone, video game console or vacuum is then restored to like-new condition (meaning it performs just like new) and is then resold at a big discount.

2Why should you consider buying refurbished?
Saving money is just one of the upsides. Opting for refurbished small appliances and tech also keeps e-waste from ending up in landfills. It’s estimated that 53.6 million metric tons of electronic waste were generated worldwide in 2019, but just 17.4 per cent of that was collected and recycled. Buying refurbished has the potential to reduce manufacturing demand, shrinking our carbon footprint and overall environmental impact.
3How do you know you can trust the quality?
- Every refurb product meets the strictest standards, guaranteeing it’s in perfect working condition.
- It must have current software installed along with new batteries.
- It must be reset to factory settings to ensure data sanitization.
- All devices undergo IMEI checks too, so you can be confident that they’re not stolen or blacklisted.

4Are there any downsides?
The product may have minor scuffs and scratches, but nothing that will impact its ability to function properly.
The warranty may also be shorter than what you’d get with a new item. Many sellers provide a 90-day warranty, which you’ll find in the product’s description on Walmart.ca.
5What types of products should you consider buying?
You can buy almost any type of tech item refurbished. Walmart’s refurb program includes the following categories:
- Laptops, desktops and tablets
- Video game consoles
- Small appliances (think vacuums and hair dryers)
- Wearable technology
You can expect appearances from brands like Samsung, Dell, HP, Huawei, Acer, Nintendo and Insignia.

6What is the return policy for Walmart’s refurbished items?
Purchases of smaller items with a retail price of $150 or less can be returned to any Walmart store. They are subject to the usual in-store return criteria, which excludes products listed as final sale. Big-ticket items need to be returned to the third-party seller directly. Many vendors have a minimum return window of 30 days from the delivery date, except for electronics like laptops and video game consoles, which have a minimum 14-day return window.
