Your Gifts to You This Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is a holiday when we are supposed to wear our hearts on our sleeves and tell that special someone that we love them. Here’s a thought: why can’t that someone … be yourself? Why do we find it so difficult to be kind, or even a little bit extravagant, when it comes to ourselves?

If you’re like me, like most people, you find yourself being pulled in all kinds of different directions every day. You need to keep your household running, the kids fed and clean (if you can!). And of course, there’s your partner, your parents, your boss, and everyone else who needs things from you RIGHT NOW! If you keep giving of yourself, there might not be anything left when the well runs dry to give to anyone else, and especially to yourself. I always try to remember that bit of airline safety advice: when things go sideways, take care of yourself before anyone else. Put on the oxygen mask first and then you’ll be ready to help whoever else may need you. Easier said than done, right?

You’ve probably already started thinking about picking out Valentine cards and treats for your children to give out at school. And, maybe you’ve already started planning your special evening with the one you love, too. It’s in our nature to think ahead and plan for upcoming celebrations. I’ve already picked out a card I plan on giving Rob for Valentine’s Day (SHH! Don’t tell him!).

Hallmark Signature Valentine's Day Card for Significant Other

This sweetheart card by HALLMARK features two happy s’mores with pink foil hearts on the cover. It reads: “Love you. Love you s’more.” Inside reads: “Love you most.”

Mmmmm … S’mores. Let’s get back to YOU, shall we? Why not devote a little time to pampering yourself on Valentine’s Day? I’m not suggesting that you fly off to get your “groove back” in the Caribbean, or even that you have to book a spa weekend away from home. Let me clarify. I’m talking about the little things that we often find so hard to indulge in now and then. Sometimes it’s the little things that can make a big difference body, mind, and soul.

Something as simple as soaking your cold, dry, winter-weary feet in warm water mixed with lavender-scented Epsom salt, can make you feel like you’ve fast-forwarded through a spa weekend—at a tiny fraction of the cost. Plus, like a good book on a winter’s night, it’s there when you need it. Ready to comfort you, soothe you, replenish you.

Let It Flow

As familiar as those old go-to T-shirt and leggings are, you deserve to feel special when you’re treating yourself to that extra bit of love this Valentine’s Day. So why not lose yourself in the plush comfort of an oversized robe? I like to buy a size up for extra room and coziness. Even the Queen wears flowing robes, so why shouldn’t we? And by George, Walmart’s got a nice selection for you right here, Your Majesty.

Put Your Head on My Shoulder … or Pillow

If the best things in life truly are free then, for me, nothing says luxury like a good night’s sleep. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults get seven to nine hours of uninterrupted sleep per night—which, in and of itself, sounds like a dream! When was the last time you replaced your trusty old pillow? Maybe it’s time you indulge in the cooling comfort of a gel pillow.

Gel pillows tend to hold their shape. The gel beads can help you to awaken cooler and more refreshed as it helps draw heat away from your body. And the support it offers for your neck and back is a bonus. My gel pillow helps me face whatever the day ahead might have in store for me.

Canada Dry—Good for Ginger Ale, Not so Much for Your Skin

If the dryness of this wintry air is taking a toll on you (I know my nostrils and face feel parched at this time of year!), you’ll want to take this gift-to-yourself wherever you go. Want to know the best part? You can! It’s a small ultrasonic (silent) humidifier that sits at your bedside and offers cooling mist to help moisturize and add comfort as you sleep. I use it every night and never, ever check into a hotel room without my portable humidifier. This little marvel is light, compact and travels like a dream. Home or away, it belongs on any bedside table or coffee table.
